Surgeons MSAKE

Project Background

A Thousand Future Surgeons is a project by doctors from Medserve Consulting LLC in collaboration with the Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME), MSAKE. The project was born out of the need to have better surgical skills at internship level and beyond, as well as more involvement of students in practical surgical skills at undergraduate level. Moreover, our country faces a dire shortage of surgeons, partly due to dwindling interest by doctors in the field and also sue to limited opportunities for residency in surgery. The project aims to highlight how interesting it is to learn surgery even as a medical student in Kenya.

Project Vision
We foresee a future in which patients in our communities have access to surgical healthcare through the availability of passionate doctors and surgeons at facilities close to them. In the short term, we aim to conduct this project as an evaluation of the level of interest of medical students in surgical skills. At the completion, in 12 months, we hope that we shall have collected enough information on what needs to change to improve surgical training in Kenya. Most importantly, we hope that you shall enjoy the experience of learning and interacting with fellow course takers.
