About MSAKE


The Medical Students’ Association of Kenya (MSAKE) is a non-profit, non-political umbrella organization that represents all medical students in Kenya and is a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA). It was established in 2007 and its main roles are health advocacy and expansion of the medical students’ academics and career space. It is made up of 9 local chapter associations including:

MSAKE is a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA). IFMSA is a non-political and non-profit organization recognized as one of the oldest and largest student-run organizations in the world. IFMSA was established in 1951 after the end of World War II to serve as a platform for unity, collaboration and peace among medical students. IFMSA has a broad representation of 144 member organizations (NMO) from 130 countries across the continents and working in close relation with several non-governmental organizations from all over the world.

IFMSA has a special consultative status within the United Nations, and has been recognized as worldwide medical student representatives by the World Health Organization and the World Medical Association on several occasions. The IFMSA’s activities range from raising awareness on public health, human rights and reproductive health issues to involving students actively in medical curricula reforms and medical education.

Aims and Objectives

  • To safeguard the interests and promote the welfare of MSAKE members.
  • To create a uniting forum for all medical students within Kenya.
  • To establish close and friendly working relations and understanding with other external organizations when, where, and while desirable. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Maintaining membership in the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) where the National Member Organization (NMO) name will be MSAKE-KENYA.
  • Working with other national medical student associations regionally and worldwide to pursue common goals.
  • To cultivate worthy qualities among members and train and prepare them for the profession of Medicine.
  • To promote holistic quality medical education, that is up to date and innovative, in Kenya.
  • To negotiate with the government and other organizations in matters affecting medical students.
  • To publish a scientific journal at least once a year.
  • To host a general assembly of all members at least once a year.
  • To be able to host medical students from other countries.
  • To work in conjunction with members organizing international medical conferences.

MSAKE Our Structure


MSAKE being a complex association with regards to its roles in representation of the medical students in Kenya to a number of correspondents both locally and globally operates under a structure that has so far proved to be very efficient.The structure has three organs that collaboratively work towards realization of MSAKE’s aims and objectives.

  • Secretariat
  • Presidential Council

The Executive Board (EB)

This is the administrative wing that is tasked with implementation of the constitution of MSAKE through dispensation of various roles assigned to them. The Executive Board comprises the:

  • Secretary General who is the overall head of the association and is otherwise referred to internationally as the National Member Organization President.
  • The Financial Officer who is the go to person for all financial accounts and transactions of the association.
  • National Officers. These are highly specialized heads of our Standing Committees that address a distinct aspect in the association for example; Research, Mental Health, Exchanges among many others

The Secretariat

All facilitations amongst the various organs in MSAKE are done through the Secretariat. Their role is very pivotal as they ensure the Executive Board and Presidential Council have a smooth running of activities. Members of the Secretariat include:
  • Secretary Capacity Building
  • Secretary for External Affairs
  • Secretary for Public Relations and Communications
  • Secretary for Publications

The Presidential Council

Presidents from the Local Chapters that are full members of MSAKE constitute the Presidential Council.

The Secretary General is also a member of the PC. This is the supreme decision making body of the Association.

The Presidents are correspondents of the medical students in their local chapters  to the MSAKE leadership.
